KARE 11 Food Fight Collects Nearly 870,000 Pounds of Food

December 20, 2013 By: Marie Pauley Category: WordPress Import

In November, the wheels in the heads of our friends at KARE 11 began to turn, trying to come up with a way they could help get food to the tables of those in need in our community during the holidays. The result was the first-ever KARE 11 Food Fight held on November 26, where teams lead by four anchors - Belinda Jensen, Julie Nelson, Eric Perkins and Randy Shaver - competed for 12 hours to fill trucks with donated food.

With even more donations trickling in after results were announced, the 12-hour Food Fight resulted in nearly 870,000 pounds of food collected, which will allow us to provide almost 680,000 meals. Team Perk won bragging rights for the year with the largest number of pounds collected, but each anchor made a significant impact on solving hunger in our local community and bringing awareness to this important issue.

2013 KARE 11 Food Fight Results

  • #TeamPerk = 333,358 pounds

  • #TeamJulie = 258,385 pounds

  • #TeamBel = 145,413 pounds

  • #TeamRandy = 123,995 pounds

Coming together quickly, the KARE 11 Food Fight looked like a flawless operation that had been in the works for months. This success would not have been possible without the support of a multitude of partners including: CH Robinson Worldwide who provided the trucks, boxes, pallets and many volunteers to help collect the food; Byerly's in Roseville, Sun Ray Cub Foods in Saint Paul, Kowalski's in Eden Prairie, and Whole Foods in Maple Grove that hosted each of the anchors; and the hundreds of individuals and corporations who came out to donate to support their favorite team.

Watch this video to see the live results revealed, see some of the fun at each of the donation locations and hear what Bel, Julie, Perk and Randy say about their experience with the KARE 11 Food Fight.

Thank you to everyone that helped make the KARE 11 Food Fight happen and to the donors that came out and supported their favorite team.
