Hunger Can Happen to Anyone
Hunger can happen to anyone. Many people are one emergency—an unexpected illness, a car payment, the loss of a job—from having to choose between paying their rent or going without food. We know that no one can be their best self when they’re hungry: from children going to school with breakfast and getting ready to learn, to workers having the energy to put in a full shift, we know that having food to count on can stabilize other aspects of life.
As the cost of living increases, many people choose to skip a meal so they can make ends meet.
At Second Harvest Heartland, we believe there is enough food to go around. We’re here to help you get food now, as well as provide resources to get you food in the future.
1 in 5 Minnesota households cannot afford the food they need.
Unfortunately, hunger can be found in every county and every population in Minnesota. This includes:
- 453,000 Minnesotans participate in SNAP
- 17% of households in Minnesota with at least one senior are food insecure
- 26% of households in Minnesota with children struggled with food insecurity
While organizations like Second Harvest Heartland and our food shelf partners adjust to meet the growing need, we’re working with communities on long-term solutions. It will require a total community effort to help more Minnesota households get the food they need.
