Interns Impact Hunger Relief
When Kurt Hager, SNAP family resource coordinator, started with Second Harvest Heartland as an outreach intern his work sent him into the community to help clients access programs for food support. Outreach interns play a critical role in providing an entry point to assistance for many households struggling with hunger.
Today, Kurt manages the very internship program for the SNAP team that first introduced him to that organization. As one of many interns that are now employees, Kurt cites his experience as an intern as the thing that inspired him to stay. “As an intern I visited agencies in every neighborhood across the Twin Cities and saw the incredible need for Second Harvest Heartland’s work. Once you are that engaged and working directly with families, you can’t really turn away.”
With the next part of the school year approaching, many students and individuals seeking new career opportunities begin searching for internship opportunities.
Second Harvest Heartland is fortunate to benefit from the support of volunteers in a variety of positions and in 2012, a formal internship program was launched with the goal of providing a more focused service-learning opportunity for individuals seeking to gain hands on experience at our organization.
This past year, interns contributed more than 6,585 hours dedicated to supporting child hunger programs, SNAP Outreach, and much more.
“Each semester new interns bring energy, passion and excitement around our mission,” said Jess Swanson, volunteer coordinator. “They help reenergize our own work and build capacity in the organization.”
What our interns said about their experience at Second Harvest Heartland:
“It is such a great place to work, especially knowing that my efforts are helping get food to more people in the community. My time here has really helped me in identifying my strengths and helped me grow in areas that I needed help in.” - Ericka Wallis, Graphic Design Intern
“It was very touching to me to know that the work we are doing really matters to people when they really need it the most." – Hannah Haugland, Summer Food Service Program Intern
For the Spring Semester, Second Harvest Heartland is currently recruiting interns in departments across the organization including Finance, Communications and Marketing, Volunteer Services and Hunger Programs.
