Feeding Hungry Families, Even in Subzero Temperatures

This month marks the one-year anniversary since Meals for Minds, Second Harvest Heartland’s mobile school pantry program, supported through funding from Target Corporation, hit the significant milestone of distributing a total of more than one million pounds of food. Flash forward to today and Meals for Minds has since distributed an additional 615,000 pounds of food! Each month Meals for Minds provides an average of 76,000 pounds of food to students and their families at 11 elementary schools throughout Minneapolis and St. Paul.

The success of the program lies in the combined efforts of our program partners, volunteers and committed staff who work together each week to make these events run smoothly. This winter’s bitter cold hasn’t always made it easy—January’s frigid weather forced us to reschedule three of the 11 events on very short notice due to school closures.

Thanks to the quick action of our warehouse, transportation and volunteer services teams, we were able to quickly reschedule these events, which was no simple task. It involved contacting all of the 100+ volunteers signed up for the events, scrambling to recruit new volunteers to fill the rescheduled shifts, rescheduling drivers and pulling and holding food orders. We even had several Second Harvest Heartland employees step in to help fill the volunteer shifts!

Sincere thanks to everyone who helped us get through this particularly challenging month of Meals for Minds, and ultimately, get food to local families who need it most.
