Cooking Out with Minnesota Viking Dalvin Cook
Minnesota Vikings running back, Dalvin Cook, has accomplished great things in his 23 years. He played college football at Florida State, where he finished his career as the school's all-time leading rusher. Cook was drafted by the Vikings in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Since then, he’s had an impressive career in Minnesota—but Cook doesn’t measure success by how many yards he gains or touchdowns he scores.
“There were times when I wasn't always sure where my next meal was coming from,” he said. “Coming from that and being where I am today, I just want to be able to give back any way I'm able to. At the end of the day, that's what success is to me."
Cook will be giving back in a big way on Saturday, August 31, during the first annual Day Out with Dalvin: Cookout & Combine, a day of food and fun to raise awareness and end hunger in Minnesota. Cook is partnering with Second Harvest Heartland on the event, which he hopes will go a long way to raising awareness of how big the problem of hunger is in Minnesota.
“Initially I wanted to celebrate Minnesota and get the community excited for the upcoming [football] season … but I also know that I have a platform that I want to use in a positive way,” he said. “So, I figured that while I still want to celebrate football and make sure the community has fun, this event should stand for a purpose and for something that I'm passionate about.”
As an athlete, healthy living and healthy eating is important to Cook. “It's a major part of what helps me perform at my best, but I don't think that this type of lifestyle should only be available to people who have the means and access to it.”
