Warm Weather, No Food

SFSP July Monthly Giver Header

When school is out, many of the families and children we serve struggle even more than usual with hunger.

Without access to free and reduced-price lunches and other programs at school, the stress of hunger increases. But two important programs help dissipate that stress. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) provides free meals to children and teens 18 and under. In partnership with Share our Strength No Kid Hungry, we help provide grants to meal sites throughout the state to help increase access and capacity for our partners to deliver more free meals.

These free meals are so important to our community and we wanted to share a few of the quotes we’ve received from families, kids and our meal-site partners.

“I appreciate this program so that my grandchildren have something to eat every day. Times are very hard and this program really helps us.” – Grandparent at a SFSP site

“As a parent it’s a hard feeling to know that you don’t have enough to feed your kids.” – Victoria

“One mother told us that she and her young children walked two miles each way to come here for lunch so that she could feed her family and make ends meet. Some young children told us that without this program they wouldn’t have anything to eat for lunch” – Site Coordinator at West 7th Community Center

“We know there are areas of the city where food isn’t readily available or accessible to kids. Our goal is to reach all kids who are hungry, regardless of neighborhood or location. We’re reaching kids that may not otherwise eat during the summer months.”  - Minneapolis Public School District representative

You can help us continue to reach children and families this summer and throughout the year by providing ongoing support as a Monthly Giver.

Thanks to matching gifts from a group of generous donors, when you sign up to be a Monthly Giver by July 31, the first 6 months of your gifts will be TRIPLED, up to a total of $20,000!

Your support will help ensure that we can continue to implement programs like free meal distribution and fresh produce distributions to ensure that children have access to healthy food all year long. Thank you!
