Volunteer Spotlight of the Month: Dee Hagen
When Dee Hagen retired, she says, “I looked back at my life and thought, ‘I’ve been so fortunate.’ I want to give back.”
That desire to give back led her to Second Harvest Heartland, where she visited an open house in October 2012 and learned that she could get involved through volunteering.
She became a volunteer the very next week, committing to a regular Wednesday shift to help sort donated foods.
Dee also volunteers two days a week at People Reaching Out to People (PROP), a Second Harvest Heartland agency partner in Eden Prairie, Minn. “In Eden Prairie, we have a very diverse population and people need help, but it’s often hidden,” she said.
Dee’s experience working with Second Harvest Heartland and directly with clients at PROP have also made her reflect back on her own upbringing on a 280-acre farm in central Minnesota where money was always scarce, but food was plentiful.
“I think of my parents, and I really was blessed. I got their work ethic, and my mother was one of the biggest givers. She baked things. She didn’t have money to give, but she’d bake a cake or give a meal,” Dee said.
By volunteering with Second Harvest Heartland, Dee has been able to pack thousands of meals that will feed hungry children, families and seniors in Minnesota.
Thank you for your hard work and generosity, Dee!
