Solving Food Waste to Help End Hunger
You can’t talk about hunger without talking about food waste. Each year, Americans waste billions of pounds of food, with up to 40 percent coming from businesses like grocery retailers, distributors, restaurants, catering companies and more.
Second Harvest Heartland has worked for years to get a framework in place to help end hunger by addressing food waste through our successful Retail Food Rescue program, working with retail grocers and convenience stores. But, double the amount of food is wasted by restaurants, caterers, event centers, campus kitchens and other meal production sites.
Focusing on prepared food rescue and working with local restaurants, catering companies and meal program partners, gives Second Harvest Heartland the opportunity to do even more for our hungry neighbors.
Watch the video below to learn more about the importance of this program and some of that partners, including Chow Girls Killer Catering and Catholic Charities, that have been the forefront of making prepared food rescue a reality.
