Recovering with the Help of FOODRx

FOODRx Client Denise Headers

September 20, 2018 By: Marie Pauley Category: Hunger Stories

A year into recovery from open heart surgery, Denise spends her days traveling to appointment after appointment, caring for her animals and maintaining as much independence as possible. Chronic heart issues coupled with diabetes and severe gastrointestinal issues keep Denise from being able to work.

The box of food, Denise received from the FOODRx program is the difference between her having food and not.

“Without the box of food, I’m eating a lot less. If you’re on a budget like I am you only have so much to work with. I’m diabetic so I can’t buy certain things, if I didn’t have that (the box of food) I would have to go without and that’s not always a good thing.”

“It helped me a lot, like I said I’m on a fixed income, so my budget is so tight. It enabled me to by some other really good food that was really good FOR me and that costs extra.”

With some very strict dietary guidelines to follow, Denise found it difficult to get the right foods from other emergency food resources, like the food shelf.

“When you go to the food shelf you don’t know what you’re going to get, this was set up for special needs. It was convenient for me because I had to be here (at the clinic) anyway”

From the carefully selected foods, healthy recipes, donations to make it possible and volunteer time to pack, Denise recognizes how much time and care goes into each box. “I really appreciate the people and time put into it,” she shares with gratitude in her voice and a smile on her face.
