Sports Community Comes Together for Our Community
For a team to succeed, each player must orchestrate their unique talent with those of their teammates, and in a way that bests their worthy opponents.
So when you’re toe to toe with an opponent unlike any you’ve faced before, you assemble an unstoppable team. Enter the Home Teams vs. Hunger initiative, a week-long awareness and fundraising campaign showcasing the power of teamwork in the fight to end hunger.
“Minnesota’s sports community has always been committed to fighting hunger alongside Second Harvest Heartland and Minnesota’s five additional Feeding America food banks, but they’ve never come together like they did for us this fall,” explained Heather Olson, corporate development officer at Second Harvest Heartland. “But unprecedented community need calls for unprecedented community support.”
The unique campaign, coordinated by Fox Sports North, featured all of Minnesota’s professional sports teams as well as the University of Minnesota’s Gopher Athletics. Campaign messages flooded television, radio and social media channels across the state, driving fans and hunger fighters to an auction and donation site, where memorabilia, autographs and unique fan experiences were up for grabs. As momentum grew, Governor Walz, Cub Foods and Kowalski's all joined the ranks. By the end of the campaign, funds were raised, and many more Minnesotans were aware of the serious hunger need in our communities.
“We can’t fix this problem on our own and we’re going to need more help, but we should start somewhere. With the resources that we have as players, as teams, I feel like we should be able to make a difference,” explained Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Josh Okogie at campaign tip-off.
There’s so much we can’t control right now, but what we can control is how we show up for one another and how we show up for the community. And thanks to our sports community showing up for this campaign, we can now provide an additional 137,979 meals to Minnesotans.
