Help Us Stamp Out Hunger on May 11!
You can participate in the nation’s largest single-day food drive without ever leaving your house. Saturday, May 11 marks the 27th annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, an inspiring day of neighbors helping neighbors when letter carriers and volunteers collect bags of healthy, non-perishable food people set out by their mailboxes.
If you’re reading this, hopefully you’ve received your blue, Stamp Out Hunger grocery bag for donations. If you haven’t spotted the blue bag in the mail, feel free to use any bag of your own.
Stamp Out Hunger is the largest, single-day food drive in the nation, collecting food for food banks and food shelves across the United States. Second Harvest Heartland partners with postal branches in Minneapolis and Saint Paul to collect food. But we need volunteers to make the day a success.
Marketing executive and longtime Stamp Out Hunger volunteer, Ginnee Berg recalls how she first connected with Second Harvest Heartland.
“When I had my home in Brooklyn Park, I got a postcard about putting food out on Stamp Out Hunger Day,” she said. “I would put out food, but I saw that not one of my neighbors did.”
Ginnee decided to take matters into her own hands and reached out to her letter carriers and Second Harvest Heartland to see what she could do to help increase participation. That was 10 years ago, and she’s been volunteering every year since.
“I did get a great deal of the neighbors to put out food,” she admits. “That’s because I would go house to house with blue bags and tell them, ‘this is my passion and it’s payback time for all the times I bought Girl Scout cookies from your kids!’ True story.”
Ask Ginnee what drives her, and she’ll tell you she can’t imagine a child or anyone not having food to eat, and hunger is something that she wants to help fight in any way she can.
“Just seeing how much food is put out for the letter carriers, it makes me cry with joy!”
This year, Second Harvest Heartland aims to collect 1.2 million pounds of food during Stamp Out Hunger, which will help provide 1 million meals much-needed for our hungry neighbors.
Please remember to set out a bag or two of nonperishable food items and encourage your neighbors to do the same. Most needed items include:
- Canned meats
- Canned fruits and vegetables
- Dry pasta
- Peanut butter
Please, no glass bottles like pasta sauce or salsa—the grocery bags have quite a commute and we don’t want your generosity to break.
If you’d prefer to give online, you can make a monetary donation and double your impact. Now through May 15, your gift will be matched by Land O’Lakes, up to a total of $25,000!
