This past Friday we were both excited and apprehensive as we saw the flatbed truck roll up to our docks with our new Freight Farm! Our Golden Valley team waited inside the warehouse, along with a local rigging company, as the truck backed up and positioned itself to unload the farm and squeeze it through lucky dock door #13.

It took some time to get everything positioned, and at one point I thought we might need to bust out some of the concrete around the door to fit the 7.5-ton container inside our confined space. Fortunately our team was able to figure it out, and with a lot of patience, we got the farm inside and placed where it can begin its 365-day growing season.

We plan to plant leafy green seeds in the farm this week and will have seedlings to transfer to the vertical towers in early January. Our first crops of lettuces and other greens will be harvested in late January and continuous every week going forward after that.

It will be exciting to work closely with our food shelf, food pantry and other meal program partners to distribute these nutritionally dense vegetables to families who are struggling to afford food. Plus, it’s a great way to kick off the New Year!
