Fire at Renville County Food Shelf a Major Loss for the Community

September 13, 2012 By: Sara Blair Category: WordPress Import

We were sad to hear the news earlier this week that the building that houses the Renville Country Food Shelf in Olivia was destroyed by a fire Sunday night. The fire destroyed all the food shelf’s contents, including five freezers and three refrigerators.

Luckily, no one was hurt in the fire, but the temporary loss of the food shelf will affect the hundreds of families they serve every month. Just last month, the food shelf helped 298 families. The food shelf hopes to be operating again soon in a temporary location in the city’s downtown.

The food shelf in Willmar will help out any families that would normally get food from the Renville location until they can back up and running again. Second Harvest Heartland will replace the food that was lost, but the food shelf will have to work to find a way to replace all of their equipment that was lost to the fire. They’re completely funded through donations and volunteers, and will need the community’s help to make this happen. If you would like to help out, you can donate to any bank in Renville County on their behalf.

Second Harvest Heartland sends our condolences to the food bank and all those affected. Here’s to wishing you a quick turn-around, Renville Country Food Shelf!
