An Opportunity to Create a Brighter, Healthier Future for Our Kids

The school year is in full-swing in Minnesota. It’s an exciting time for students who are starting new grade levels, learning new things, making new friends. Yet, not all our students are able to focus on school. Because it’s hard to focus on anything, much less learn, when you haven’t eaten that morning. For this reason, Second Harvest Heartland and local school partners are working hard to implement and increase participation in free and reduced-cost federal meal programs.

We recently visited a local school to ask students how having free and reduced-cost meals available at school helps to fuel their day.

Students from South Saint Paul Secondary school who participate in the Second Chance Breakfast program said they feel the difference a healthy breakfast makes.

“I don’t eat at home so this [Second Chance Breakfast] is great.” – Jazzy (16)

“Breakfast gives me energy for the day.” – Carolyn (15)

“When I get to school, I feel tired and my stomach is growling. Breakfast helps.”  – Josh (16)

The breakfast initiative is part of Second Harvest Heartland’s Food + You program. The school-based program increases availability of healthy food resources to students and their families by partnering with schools and offering support for accessing existing federal nutrition programs and connections to broader community resources and food distributions.

You can help support meal programs like Food + You and fuel a stronger, healthier future when everyone is fed, by donating to Second Harvest Heartland on Give to the Max Day!

“We depend on Give to the Max Day to be one of our largest fundraising days of the year to help feed our hungry neighbors this holiday season and all year long,” said Marsha Shotley, chief philanthropy officer, Second Harvest Heartland. “It’s the perfect time to come together to help create a Minnesota where parents have the peace-of-mind that comes with a full pantry and our kids arrive at school bright-eyed and ready to learn. We are so grateful for all our generous donors on this day and every day.”

Schedule your gift today or donate on Thursday, Nov. 15.

When you choose to give to Second Harvest Heartland on Give to the Max Day, your donation goes twice as far, thanks to matching funds from The Mosaic Company Foundation, Post Consumer Brands and a group of private donors.
