All it Takes is One Click to Feed Hungry Kids
Click for Lunch has raised thousands of dollars to support the Summer Food Service Program since it began in 2011. This week, IN Food Marketing & Design is celebrating summer by kicking off its 9th Click for Lunch campaign. Their goal is to raise $5,000, which would help provide nearly 15,000 meals for kids. We talked with Drew Harkman, an account coordinator and campaign organizer for the company, about the fundraising effort.
Q. How did your organization first get involved with Second Harvest Heartland?
As an advertising agency that specializes in the food industry, we’ve always been passionate about serving our community, particularly around problems like hunger and food insecurity. We started volunteering with Second Harvest Heartland about 15 years ago and were so impressed by the great work you were doing. We couldn’t help wanting to get more involved!
Q. Why do a fundraising campaign like this?
We started in 2011 when many families were struggling with the effects of the recession. Even though our economy has improved greatly, there is still such a need to help kids who are at risk of going hungry over the summer.
Q. Why choose Second Harvest Heartland as the beneficiary?
We chose Second Harvest Heartland because your organization has the infrastructure, the programs and the buying power to make each dollar go further. We chose to donate the money towards the Summer Food Service Program because we believe every child should have access to quality food. While there are many food drives around the holidays, it’s less likely that people think about hunger in the summer months, particularly as it relates to children.
Q. Have you ever volunteered with us?
Yes, many times. We love it. (See photo above.)
Q. Why is combating hunger so important to your organization?
We’re fortunate to work with top food companies to help them market their brands. At the same time, we are very aware that food insecurity is a real issue in our country and our community. That’s why we made the commitment to donate 5 percent of our profits to hunger-relief efforts locally. It’s empowering for us to know that the better we do, the more good we can do.
Q. Have you (or anyone you know) ever been impacted by hunger?
Chances are, we all know someone who has been impacted by hunger and they may be a lot closer to you than you think. That’s why it’s such an important issue to us. It really knows no bounds.
Q. Does IN Food Marketing believe hunger is a solvable problem?
We believe that there are solutions to almost every problem with dedicated commitment, creative thinking and a strong combined effort. Hunger is no different. It’s a real problem, but we believe it is a solvable one if we all continue to work together.
