Agency Partner Spotlight: Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis
“We have evolved from an organization serving a very specific population in 1869 to a broad-based organization that serves the entire community, regardless of faith, circumstance or background,” says Julia Jenson, Catholic Charities’ Director of External Affairs & Communications.
In operation for 145 years, today Catholic Charities serves everyone that walks through their doors. Their housing and emergency shelter program is now the largest of all services offered – providing shelter, meals and more for those experiencing homelessness. In the last year they served nearly 800,000 meals to those living in poverty.
“We are seeing more seniors and older adults access our services across the board. They are the fastest growing homeless age group,” Jenson says.
The Dorothy Day Center, their well-known service center that features emergency housing and meal programs, has some exciting changes in the works. In early October, the nonprofit broke ground on a new building.
“The new vision is a two-building solution that is designed to prevent and end homelessness for those most in need,” Jenson says.
The new complex will help to provide affordable, permanent housing, as well as self-sufficiency services and warm meals for Minnesotans in need.
