Mort and Merle Kane’s support of Second Harvest Heartland started with a desire to support the nutritional needs of people in the community. In the course of their research, Second Harvest Heartland rose to Mort Merle Kanethe top of their list of organizations that feed hungry people.

“An individual can make such a dramatic impact by supporting Second Harvest Heartland, where one dollar is transformed into eight dollars’ worth of food and grocery products,” said Mort. “Their efficiency is amazing, and I feel like my contributions are leveraged to accomplish so much more.”

Mort and his wife Merle have become more involved with Second Harvest Heartland’s mission over time—by touring our warehouses, volunteering to repack food at our Golden Valley location, and attending major events such as Dish: Cuisine for Change.

“For those interested in addressing the problem of hunger, we have in Second Harvest an exceptional opportunity to help solve a problem so critical for so many,” said Mort.

Mort admires Second Harvest Heartland’s creativity—which he says includes working with growers to acquire more fresh produce, as well as coordinating with other organizations to find new solutions to feed hungry people.

To complete the circle of hunger relief, Mort and Merle also work directly with a few Second Harvest Heartland agency partners, distributing produce and groceries, and serving meals. Through the Morton and Merle Kane Family Partnership Philanthropic Fund, they are engaging the next generation of philanthropists. The partners, who are their four children—Gail and Howard Milstein; Janet Kane; Michael and Michelle Kane; and Lisa Kane and Kieran Folliard—make philanthropic decisions based on their interests and passions.

“Food and housing serve critical needs, and collectively, the partners agree that Second Harvest Heartland is an important part of the puzzle. Our family is so pleased to have named Second Harvest Heartland as a beneficiary of our charity,” said Mort.

Second Harvest Heartland thanks the entire Kane family for their passion, involvement and financial support of our organization!
