Volunteer Spotlight of the Month: Monday Morning CSFP Drive-Through Volunteers

January 29, 2016 By: Marie Pauley Category: Volunteer

Monday through Friday, 30 volunteers support the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) at Second Harvest Heartland to help distribute monthly food boxes to seniors in need.

Cath, Charlie and Ann make up the Monday morning crew and bring consistent warmth, smiles and engagement to the seniors visiting Second Harvest Heartland each Monday. Each helping individuals visiting the CSFP drive forget their troubles, even if only for a brief moment.

Monday CSFP Volunteers

Cath is a retiree from 3M. Volunteering has become a big part of her life in retirement, donating her time to Second Harvest Heartland, through her church at Valley Outreach Food shelf and as a horse leader at River Valley Riders. In one shift at Second Harvest Heartland, Cath sorts and distributes up to 600 pounds a day.

Charlie is a retired electrician and volunteer firefighter. As an active member in the community, Charlie shows up to sort, bag, carry and load food boxes into seniors’ vehicles to help them get through the month.

Ann is well versed in the issue of senior hunger from her work before retirement at the Wilder Foundation advocating for early assisted living and other service alternatives to Nursing Homes for the Elderly.  To Ann, the seniors we serve are heroes for seeking help and making strides to remain healthy and independent.
