Volunteer Spotlight of the Month: Kathy Yano
Kathy Yano has been volunteering with Second Harvest Heartland for the past six months as a SNAP Line volunteer and has just signed on for six more. She currently spends her Tuesday mornings at our West facility in Golden Valley following up with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) clients.
“It doesn’t take much of your time - about three hours a week - it doesn’t cost you anything and you’re making a difference in people’s lives,” Kathy says, encouraging others to volunteer. “I tell my friends that if they want to feel like they’ve accomplished something, go be a volunteer.”
Kathy used to make financial donations when she was working, but now that she’s retired and on a tighter budget, she prefers to donate her time.
“The staff at Second Harvest Heartland is especially appreciative of the work I do,” says Kathy. “I like walking away and feeling like I helped out.”
Sometimes people just need a reminder or an extra push to get things done, and she’s more than happy to help, especially if it helps to relieve some stress by getting food on the table.
