Voices of Hunger - The Front Lines of Hunger Relief

Every volunteer that walks through the doors at our Second Harvest Heartland warehouse in St. Paul meets Nancy Springer, and almost no one who leaves ever forgets her. Her compassion, enthusiasm and sincere dedication to working with volunteers to help our hungry neighbors shines through every day.

As a Second Harvest Heartland Volunteer Site Lead, Nancy oversees all volunteer groups at our St. Paul Warehouse—she orients and coordinates volunteer groups, provides overall supervision for sites during operation, facilitates teamwork and a positive morale, and makes sure that every volunteer’s experience runs smoothly.

“Every volunteer project is different, so it’s hard to know what to expect on a day-to-day basis. My main goal is to come in every day and guarantee volunteer happiness,” Nancy says. “I engage the volunteers in our mission. I want every volunteer that leaves here to know the direct impact they’ve had towards our mission.”

In the five years that Nancy has been the Volunteer Site Lead at Second Harvest Heartland, she has seen a dramatic increase in the number of volunteers coming through our doors. More than 12,000 volunteers donated their time to Second Harvest Heartland in 2011, up from just 9,000 volunteers in 2010 and 7,500 in 2009.

“When I started, I was just leading volunteers for the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), but now I lead volunteers for all the different programs because there is such a demand for volunteerism. I even take volunteer projects off site into company headquarters now,” says Nancy.

Although Nancy enjoys all volunteer groups, her favorites are those who volunteer in memory of a loved one. “One particular volunteer group that made an impact on me is a family that came in and volunteered for another family member that had recently passed. They promised their mother they would do something special in her memory, and they decided to pack up food for those in need in their community,” said Nancy. “That is special.”

So if you ever get the chance to volunteer at our St. Paul Warehouse—you’ll probably meet Nancy. And you’ll probably remember your experience with her for years to come.
