Families Like Artesian's are Facing Tough Choices
Artesian is a 27 year old with more on her plate than most individuals much older. She is a caretaker, not just for her two young sons, but she also supports her 16-year-old niece and works as a personal care attendant.
Artesian is also a student, going to school to learn sign language. Someday, she hopes to work with the deaf and hard of hearing, but today her focus is on making ends meets for her family. While Artesian is happy to have the support of her mother to help provide childcare, by the end of the month there is often still not enough for complete, healthy meals for everyone.
“We have a hard time especially at the end of the month. We have to substitute other things for food and go to the food shelf to make it work,” says Artesian.
It’s a struggle to find healthy, affordable food. With the support of the food shelf, Artesian has been able to find ways to provide meals for everyone in her family without giving up on other necessities.
“I have to find food that’s healthy, but cheap,” says Artesian, “without the food shelf we probably wouldn’t be eating a full meal every day or I would be substituting a meal for myself to make sure my kids have a meal.”
