Food Is Expensive

Food is Expensive - 1 in 5 Minnesotans can't afford it.

Food insecurity is too common. Food prices are 30% higher now than they were at the beginning of 2020. In the past year, 32% of Minnesotans worried about whether they would have enough food, and 20% of Minnesotans regularly access the emergency food system (e.g., food shelves, SNAP, food banks) to get food.

Our emergency food system helps 20% of Minnesota households

Food banks, food shelves, and SNAP are the three primary components of the system.

Food banks, like Second Harvest Heartland, rescue and procure hundreds of millions of pounds of food and help it get to food shelves

Food shelves provide food to people in neighborhoods across the state

SNAP and other government programs provide financial assistance that people can use to buy groceries

HOW WE END HUNGER:

Policy Change for Good

Far-reaching and long-lasting impact comes from public policy

How You Can Help

To end hunger in Minnesota, we need everyone to participate.

You can use your voice to become an anti-hunger advocate. Elected officials have the power to end hunger, but they need to hear from you, their constituents. We'll help you tell your legislators that ending hunger matters to you. It only takes a minute!

If you have more time, you can volunteer to help us pack food into smaller quantities that will get distributed to people who need it.
