One Year In, St. Paul City School Food Shelf Continues to Support Families
As students settle in to their fall routines, one local school is celebrating another year of supporting nutrition needs at home.
Last year, St. Paul City School, with support from Second Harvest Heartland and generous corporate partners, opened its very own in-school food shelf. During its first year of operation, the shelf served hundreds of individual families and coordinators are hoping to continue that impact into this new semester.
“Having the food shelf right here at St. Paul City School has made a big difference for our families,” said Shina Massey, Community Coordinator at St. Paul City School. “Students know food is available and feel comfortable letting us know when their families need support. Some students pick up food for their families and take it home on the school bus.”
Massey said the school food shelf became a lifeline for many families during Operation Metro Surge. With the food shelf onsite, school staff took it upon themselves to deliver food directly to families who needed it, providing much-needed support during a difficult time for many.
