New Volunteer Opportunities Available at Second Harvest Heartland

August 1, 2013 By: Sara Blair Category: WordPress Import

At Second Harvest Heartland, not only do we welcome and encourage volunteerism, we depend on it. Last year, we benefited from more than 99,000 hours of volunteer time—the equivalent of 47 full-time employees. Without this tremendous contribution, our hungry neighbors would not receive the food they need.

That’s why we’re excited about some new and upcoming volunteer opportunities. Read below to find out how you can make an important and tangible difference for those in need.

Fresh Food Rescue
We’ve added a new Fresh Food Rescue shift at our Maplewood facility every Monday and Wednesday from 1pm to 3pm. This is a hands-on activity of sorting and repacking fresh produce that comes directly from our fast-growing retail Food Rescue program.

Saturday Shifts Continue
At Golden Valley, we'll be continuing with our Saturday afternoon shift of 12:30pm to 2:30pm. This weekend shift was piloted this summer as an every-other-weekend opportunity, but will now be available every Saturday starting the first weekend in September.

Gleaning Lead Opportunities
We’re looking for several dedicated gleaners to coordinate gleaning opportunities (picking fresh, healthy produce at local farms), manage volunteers and maintain relationships with the farmers.

Valleyfair Volunteers Needed
What is a better way to spend a sunny summer day than at Valleyfair? Shakopee’s popular amusement park is hosting a Food & Fund Drive benefitting Second Harvest Heartland, August 24 to September 2, and we need your help. Two volunteers are needed for every shift to help collect food and monetary donations.

In exchange for volunteering, you will receive free admission to enter the park on that day with free parking. In addition, each volunteer will receive one complimentary ticket to be used by September 15. Invite a family member or friend to join you in the park either before or after your volunteer shift, or use the complimentary ticket yourself on another day. Volunteers must be age 12 and up.

For more information on any of these volunteer opportunities, please visit our volunteer calendar at, email or call 651.282.0901.

Thank you Second Harvest volunteers for devoting your time to fight hunger and feed hope!
