Second Harvest Heartland believes no one should ever go hungry, as our region produces more than enough food for everyone. Helping hungry neighbors find their next meal—so they can thrive at work, in the classroom and in their communities—is what drives Second Harvest Heartland, its partners and supporters. Beyond feeding hungry neighbors, Second Harvest Heartland believes in the importance of our work to help sustain our environment.
Second Harvest Heartland was created on October 1, 2001, when Second Harvest Greater Minneapolis and Second Harvest St. Paul joined forces to bring together more than 44 years of combined history and experience to the fight against hunger.

At Second Harvest Heartland, we work to end hunger through community partnerships. As one of the nation’s largest, most efficient and most innovative hunger relief organizations, we leverage our unique position in the emergency food chain to make an impact.
Food Sources & Donors
Second Harvest Heartland procures food from manufacturers, farmers, hotels, restaurants, food drives and more.
Second Harvest Heartland
Distributes enough food for more than 81 million meals annually, ensuring food safety throughout entire process.
Food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, meal programs and after-school programs distribute food in our community.

Second Harvest Heartland is a member of Feeding America—the nationwide network of more than 200 foodbanks serving every state in the United States. This partnership helps to significantly amplify the organization’s impact and reach by providing access to millions of pounds of surplus food and grocery donations.
We focus on strong results, innovation and thought leadership to accomplish the following:
- Create a sustainable support system that provides access to food.
- Find new, more efficient and more effective, ways to do more with the food resources in our community.
- Tap into new sources of donated food; including fresh, nutritious produce from an ever-expanding network of growers, food manufacturers and processors.
- Work to give more people greater access to food as well as improve support for the people we’re currently serving.
Our values are the behaviors and practices we focus on every day as we work with fellow employees and our partners. Our values are the ‘compass’ that guides us so that we can make our mission a reality.
How We Feed Neighbors in Need
Working with our wide network of partners, volunteers and donors, our 90,000+ square feet of dry, refrigerator and freezer space is constantly accepting and distributing donations. Our fleet of trucks travels nearly half a million miles a year, picking up food donations and delivering them to local food shelves, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, senior community centers and children’s feeding programs.
Our work is about more than moving food. It’s about making families whole again — making sure kids have the food they need to learn in school, relieving the stress of an empty cupboard for parents, or giving seniors a little bit more so they can stretch their dollars every month. In 2018, we helped provide more than 89 million meals to nearly 1,000 food shelves, pantries and other partner programs serving 59 counties in Minnesota and western Wisconsin.
