With 1 in 6 children in Minnesota at risk of hunger on any given day, Second Harvest Heartland is helping to address the intersection of hunger and education. We know it is hard for kids to concentrate in the classroom on empty stomachs and when hunger pangs hit, behavioral issues rise.
Persistent hunger can even affect brain development in young children. Also, when students experience hunger it likely means the family as a whole is experiencing hunger, so we are helping to increase food security of families as they connect with school communities. Here’s how:
Transforming lives through tailored school solutions
Our new Food + You school-based pilot program—lead funding provided by Target—aims to increase availability of healthy food resources to students and their families by partnering with 16 participating schools in the metro area.
This multi-dimensional pilot program offers direct food distributions, support for accessing existing federal nutrition programs and connections to broader community resources.
How Food + You works
The Food + You program has three main components:
- Direct food distributions at participating schools via family food boxes or on-site food pantries.
- Support through a Nutrition Navigator at Second Harvest Heartland to catalyze access and activation of meals through available federal nutrition programs.
- Connection to additional community resources like food shelves.
