Each Sunday from mid-July through October, we will be collecting surplus produce from vendors at the Minneapolis Farmers Market on Lyndale Ave., just outside downtown.
Each week we run two shifts at the market:
During the morning (approximately 8:00-11:30am), volunteers focus on shopper outreach, educating market shoppers about the program, and encouraging them to purchase extra produce to donate at our market booth. You’ll also have an opportunity to provide information on Second Harvest Heartland to interested shoppers who stop by the booth. For the morning shift, we are looking for volunteers who will enjoy the atmosphere of the market and are excited about the opportunity to converse with market shoppers about the program.
During the afternoon (approximately noon-3:00pm), volunteers focus on produce collection. We provide the farmers with empty boxes, which they fill with donated produce as they pack up their booths as the market day winds down. Volunteers circulate through the market with 2-wheeled carts, collecting full boxes, then stacking these boxes onto pallets at a staging area, where they are loaded onto a truck for delivery to the Second Harvest Heartland warehouse. Volunteers for this shift should be able to lift and carry up to 20-30 lbs.
Market is at 312 E Lyndale Avenue N., Minneapolis, just west of downtown:
