At our Maplewood location Second Harvest Heartland volunteers pack boxes for the supplemental nutrition program. In an assembly-line fashion, volunteers add food components to the package until it reaches the end of the line. Then, it is palletized, tagged and wrapped for distribution. The whole operation is the responsibility of your group.* Use it as a great team building exercise!  15 to 25 volunteers are needed per shift at our Maplewood location, with up to 15 shifts per month.

Shifts run Monday through Friday from 9-noon and 1-4 pm.We have occasional shifts on Tuesdays and Thursday from 5-7 pm but they fill up quickly.

These completed packages are distributed to low-income seniors and mothers with children under six years old. Each box that is produced by your group represents a family that you help provide food for that month. We need to produce 10,000 boxes per month, all of which are packed by volunteers!

In our Minneapolis location , which we call the Service Center, we receive food collected from food drives and donations. Volunteers are needed for a variety of jobs, including repackaging bulk food such as pasta into consumer size packages, sorting damaged products or food items, or labeling cans. Those items then go to our 950 member agencies and programs who, in turn, provide them for their clients. We can use groups that total in the 6 – 20 person range. Shifts run throughout the day Mondays through Friday, with some options for Wednesday evenings.

At both locations your group* will touch hundreds, possibly thousands, of lives of people in need in our service area. It’s really that easy to make an impact!

*Our policy requires that youth ages 14-18 must be accompanied by one adult age 21 or older in a minimum ratio of 1 adult to 6 youth. Volunteer requests for age 13 and under must be addressed on a case-by-case basis. In the warm weather months, volunteers must wear close-toed shoes.  These requirements reflect safety concerns at our Second Harvest Heartland locations.
