Wills and Bequests

Define Your Legacy—Join the Table of Hope Society

Table of Hope Legacy GiftBy making a legacy gift today, you’ll help us keep our promise to put food on the tables of those in need for years to come. You can secure your legacy in a most meaningful way by making a commitment to the long-term stability of Second Harvest Heartland and the people we serve.

Using bequests made through wills, revocable living trusts, appreciated stock, real estate, mutual funds, securities, life insurance and other giving options, you can ease the stress and worry of hunger for countless people well into the future.

Donors often find that legacy gifts allow them to support an organization with assets that might otherwise be lost to estate, income or capital gains taxes.

A planned gift to Second Harvest Heartland is best made with the counsel of one's financial advisor, such as an attorney, accountant, banker, financial planner or insurance professional. The most common types of planned gifts are given through wills or retirement accounts; however there are many other alternatives.

Legacy gift: Wanda Lorentzen

Wanda Lorentzen SupporterWanda Lorentzen had a very independent spirit and was a life-long learner, with over 1,200 books in her personal library. She was also very generous and cared deeply for helping those around her and from afar–hosting many foreign exchange students from all over the world.

When Wanda learned of her terminal illness in 2011, she had a discussion with her sister, Deb Gerber, on how to establish a long-term commitment to helping those in need in her community. According to Deb, Wanda decided that food was one of the basic human needs she wanted to support and selected Second Harvest Heartland as the organization she most trusted with her bequest.

Deb is very proud of her sister, not only for the thoughtful way Wanda planned her legacy gift, but also for confirming her independence by self-directing her legacy while she was still with us.
