When Robert Johnson passed away at age 79 last March, he was survived by a large family: his wife, six children, thirteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Bob was a man who touched many people’s lives and his family felt it would be fitting to remember him through acts of service for others.

At Second Harvest Heartland, we’re honored this generous family has chosen to dedicate their gifts of money and time to our mission of ending hunger through community partnerships. Over the year that the Johnson family has volunteered with us each month, their sense of family and commitment to helping others has touched us, too, and we wanted to share this story with you.

Our father is Robert Johnson and Amelia is our mother. There are six children in the Johnson family. Some of us kids researched volunteer opportunities to do with our daughters and some friends and came across your organization. We decided to try it and really enjoyed the people and what your organization does. We continue to volunteer in our father’s memory and in memory of our friends who have also lost special people in their lives. We used some of the monetary gifts we received from our father’s service and made an initial donation and continue to make monetary donations along with our volunteer hours each month.

Our group consists of family and very close friends who spend a lot of time together. We choose a restaurant in the area and visit together after we volunteer. This is something we all look forward to each month with other children and husbands joining the group regularly.

Robert was a very family-oriented man and family and friends were very important to him. He was a very kind man who was loved by many.

After volunteering here for about a year, we have come to find that Second Harvest Heartland is a great organization that does a lot of good for people in the community. We are always telling people that it is a wonderful place to volunteer and that the people are very nice.

Sincere thanks to the Johnson family and friends for such generous support of our mission!
