Volunteer Spotlight of the Month: Jessica Thompson
At Second Harvest Heartland, we focus on data to help us understand the reach and scope of hunger in our communities.
That focus made us a good fit for Optum software engineer and Second Harvest Heartland technology volunteer Jessica Thompson. “I want to use data to better solve problems,” Jessica said.
Jessica’s current volunteer project is to support the implementation of a new application that Second Harvest Heartland’s agency partners use to report key statistics, such as how many clients they serve each month.
Once agency partners report these statistics back to Second Harvest Heartland, Jessica collates the data for entry into our internal database, which we then use to understand and communicate how we are serving our hungry neighbors. Ultimately, this data helps us more effectively and efficiently serve our agency partners.
Jessica enjoys the challenge and finds satisfaction in applying her specialized skillset to her volunteer work.
“It’s important to give back, and this is something I can do in my off hours. I deal with data problems all day, but here I deal with different problems,” she said. “There’s a sense of accomplishment that comes with solving problems, especially when you’re volunteering.”
Thanks to volunteers like Jessica, Second Harvest Heartland can make our resources work harder to serve more people in need.
