Volunteer Spotlight of the Month: Wendy Wilkinson

January 23, 2014 By: Sara Blair Category: WordPress Import

As an elementary school teacher, Second Harvest Heartland volunteer Wendy Wilkinson’s greatest joy was encouraging curiosity in her students.

Her classroom was a place where her fourth graders could bring in souvenirs from family trips and spark an impromptu geography, art or science lesson. She enjoyed seeing her students realize their curiosity was a gift they could share with others.

In September 2009, Wendy’s own curiosity brought her to Second Harvest Heartland as a volunteer.

“My eyes have been opened to the reality of families who are experiencing food insecurity and their efforts to work hard to feed their families,” Wendy said. “Without volunteering my time here, I would not have a full understanding of the facts and the faces.”

Wendy has volunteered in several departments over the last four-plus years. She started in field services where she updated information on each of our agencies. Most recently she has taken on the role of supporting the account specialists by entering data and documentation for the agency relations team. Wendy also works with the CSFP (Commodity Supplemental Food Program) department where she keeps track of over 1,000 volunteers who distribute the MAC/NAPS boxes each month.

“Every hour I spend doing data entry, organizing and filing, the staff has another hour in the community making connections and expanding our efforts to end hunger,” Wendy said.

Ever the teacher, Wendy says that she uses the knowledge that she has gained at Second Harvest Heartland to educate friends and family about hunger and what Second Harvest Heartland is doing to end it.

Thank you, Wendy, for your hard work and tireless advocacy!
