Volunteer Spotlight of the Month: Judy Gamboni

February 18, 2014 By: Sara Blair Category: WordPress Import

When Judy Gamboni noticed some of her students at St. Catherine University were struggling with food insecurity, she quickly became aware of the growing need for food assistance in her own community.

“When I hear about students who have to choose between rent, gas to get to school and food, I don’t like to think of them, or their kids, because a lot of them are single parents, going hungry,” said Judy. “We now have a social worker on staff and an Access and Success program for student-parents. Right when that started is when I started to volunteer.”

At Second Harvest Heartland, Judy has been helping fight hunger for more than five years—first as a Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) drive-thru assistant, and now as a data entry volunteer.

Judy’s spirit of giving was passed down from her parents, who were “always volunteering,” participating in community organizations to support causes from basic needs to youth development. Now an assistant professor in the radiography department, Judy’s passion for her students and their success is what drives her to continue giving the gift of time to Second Harvest Heartland.

Volunteers like Judy are crucial to our hunger relief efforts, and we can’t thank them enough.
