Fresh Produce Distribution Season Begins
It’s a Saturday morning in Columbia Heights. Volunteers begin to arrive at Southern Anoka Community Assistance (SACA) to set up for their first produce distribution of the season. While pallets full of produce begin to unload, volunteers prepare to begin early as individuals from the community have been lining up all morning.
This is a familiar sight for SACA and 9 other agency partners as the fresh produce distribution season begins.
Many of our agency partners distribute produce in some way as part of their normal operations throughout the year, but beginning each July a select group of partners get a little extra help through our Fresh Produce Distribution Partnership. Funded by UnitedHealthcare, the Fresh Produce Distribution Partnership helps 10 local food shelves bring produce distributions to high-need areas by providing support through volunteers, funding and of course, produce.
At each distribution, local families have access to free fruits and vegetables, most of which are Minnesota-grown and donated through our Share Fresh program.
To kick off the season, which will last until October, UnitedHealthcare volunteers joined individuals from SACA and the Minnesota Vikings at their distribution on Saturday, July 22. In just the first day, SACA reached more than 200 households with fresh fruits and vegetables that they might not be able to afford.
