Lee visits Second Harvest Heartland’s Maplewood location once a month to pick up her Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) box. Through CSFP, Second Harvest Heartland provides a box of nutritious food each month to low-income seniors through the Nutrition Assistance Program for Seniors (NAPS) program.

Lee appreciates the food and occasional extras that are provided, and especially likes the Farmer’s Market vouchers and the reminder calls she receives from Second Harvest Heartland to pick up her monthly box.

“I like the variety, and I really like when they have extras,” said Lee. “It depends on when you go, but sometimes they even have frozen stuff. The people there are really so nice. It’s nice to go and visit; it’s like a social outlet.”

Lee lives with her youngest son, his wife and two grandkids. She does the majority of the cooking for the family, in addition to help raise her grandchildren.

“I take care of the baby and 10-year-old granddaughter; it’s basically daycare.”

As Lee’s only form of food assistance, the CSFP boxes help her stretch her grocery budget and eat healthy.

“I’m not going to starve, but those boxes really help,” said Lee.
