For 13 years, Bremer Bank and Second Harvest Heartland have partnered to raise funds and awareness to end the problem of hunger in our country. Daniel Ward is the manager of Bremer Bank in White Bear Lake, Minn. “The campaign is about feeding hungry families,” Ward emphasized. “This is a great tradition that goes beyond our location and our customers to all our communities. We’re doing this because we want our communities to be strong.”

Ward kicked off the Meals to Many campaign at his location with brightly colored signs and decals. Customers who visit the location have the option to donate on the spot, but they can also contribute to the campaign online. As an added perk, Bremer Bank offers employees the option to wear jeans on Fridays throughout June when they donate a nominal amount each week to the campaign, although Ward said most employees will donate more than the suggested amount.

“I think people forget that hunger is a problem,” Ward said. “We want to bring it to the forefront of everyone’s minds. Just the other day, one of my kids told me they shared their lunch with a friend because he didn’t have enough to eat. This problem is real.”

Ward said the issue of food insecurity touches home for him and is the reason he is especially passionate about the Meals to Many campaign.

“When I was a kid, my dad was laid off from his job in the steel industry,” he said. “It was a struggle for us, but due to organizations like Second Harvest Heartland, we didn’t have to go without food. It’s why I feel I need to be involved now.”
