When it comes to hunger relief, it’s all hands on deck. Of all the food drives that food shelves and food banks use to collect much-needed items for our hungry neighbors nationwide, the largest single-day drive—Stamp Out Hunger—is orchestrated by the dedicated people who deliver your mail every day.

Dale Forde, one of the Twin Cities letter carriers, has been a large part of the event in Minnesota since day one. A letter carrier for 37 years, Dale got involved with Stamp Out Hunger right when it started 25 years ago, and he has been a coordinator for the event for most of those years.

“I haven’t personally had to deal with hunger,” Dale said. “I just know there are families out there who are in need of food shelves and … in need of our donations, the more the better. We all need food.” Stamp Out Hunger is all about giving that food. In the course of the last quarter century, the event has collected and distributed 1.5 billion pounds of food to food banks across the nation.

This year, Stamp Out Hunger takes place on Saturday, May 13. This local chapter of the event benefits Second Harvest Heartland and those we serve.

Participating in Stamp Out Hunger is an easy way to get involved if you live in the Twin Cities—you don’t even have to leave your home. Simply fill a grocery bag (or two!) with non-perishable food items and set it by your mailbox on the morning of May 13.

During that day, letter carriers like Dale will deliver mail to each house on their routes like normal, and then they will pick up any donated food at each residence on their way back to their mail trucks. It’s a lot of heavy lifting, but these letter carriers are excited to give back, and the day is made possible in part by fleets of volunteers spread throughout food drop-off sites throughout the city. The thousands of bags of food will then get sorted at Second Harvest Heartland and distributed to help provide meals to the hungry children, hardworking families and struggling seniors who need it most.

If you won’t be in town on May 13 or you want to make an even greater difference, please make a gift online. Land O’Lakes is matching donations $1-for-$1, doubling your impact, up to $25,000! That means $1 helps provide six meals.

For Dale, at the end of the day, the best part about this event is “knowing that our accomplishment in one single day is helping many. We can do so much in one day. The need is out there, and we’re helping.” Thanks to Dale and the 2,000 other letter carriers nationwide who participate, we are truly working together and making an enormous impact.
