Food banking is Second Harvest Heartland’s core program. Our Distribution Centers have more than 86,000 square feet of dry, refrigerator and freezer space ready to receive and distribute corporate food donations, government commodities and food from community drives. Second Harvest Heartland recently expanded our freezer/cooler storage by 7,200 square feet. The St. Paul (Maplewood) Distribution Center can now handle an additional 483 pallets of food. Bar code tracking technology and a fleet of 13 trucks allow Second Harvest Heartland to efficiently distribute about 34 million pounds of food annually to our 950 member agency programs. The food bank not only provides safely-handled food to agencies serving hungry people, it also reduces the amount of nutritious food and personal care items that are wasted.
